Siri Paiboun, the national coroner, had been wondering whether his new incarnation might be disruptive to the natural laws of animal behavior. It looked around to get its bearings, then headed once more for the wall.įor over a month, Dr. Siri could see the stunned confusion on its little puckered face. For a house lizard this was the equivalent of a man coming unstuck from the ground and falling up with a crash onto the ceiling. The animal had lost its grip and come plummeting down with a splat onto the bare concrete of the guesthouse floor. On both occasions, the unthinkable had happened. Twice, the small gray creature had scurried up the wall and ventured out across the ceiling. Siri lay beneath the grimy mesh of the mosquito net, watching the lizard’s third attempt.

Print The World Within: A Novel of Emily Bronte Review: This western adventure story, published in 1912, has proved the most popular of Zane Grey’s novels and is generally regarded as a seminal work in the genre. More central than confrontation becomes the evolving relationships between the characters, amidst a living vibrant landscape as all their lives are transformed. As the romance between Lassiter and Jane develops, Jane increasingly abandons her church and Lassiter his guns. Meanwhile, Jane’s humanising effect on Lassiter is being compounded by her adoption of a little girl, Fay. Taking refuge in a hidden valley to care for Bess, a young rustler he’d accidentally shot, he begins to fall in love. A parallel plot emerges when Venters goes in search of Jane’s rustled cattle. This becomes complicated by Jane’s desire to wean him off ‘living by the feud’. Though Lassiter has long been on a quest to revenge the abduction of his sister, he elects to help fight Jane’s persecution. Venters is saved from a ‘warning-off’ whipping by Lassiter, a nomadic gunman and infamous killer of Mormons. Moreover, she has turned for support to Venters, a ‘gentile’ cowboy friend. She is resisting becoming a polygamous wife of a Mormon elder, which would effectively cede her estate to the church. Plot Summary: Jane Withersteen, a young and beautiful Mormon rancher, is in conflict with the corrupt patriarchal leadership of her Mormon community. First up, we head on out to the western canyons with the cowboys… This month we are reading adventure and sea stories. He is particularly incisive on how the drug industry distorts medical care by, say, encouraging the use of statins like Lipitor rather than advising patients to lose weight. He takes particular aim at the outsourcing to private companies of clinical drug trials, once the domain of the National Institutes of Health and academics and now a $30 billion industry. Healy chronicles the rise of blockbuster drugs like Prozac and Vioxx and how drug companies hyped them while downplaying their hazards. “We are quite literally taking drugs to save the lives of companies who have a greater interest in the vitality of the diseases they market drugs for than in our well-being,” argues British psychiatrist Healy (Let Them Eat Prozac) in this scathing critique of the $900 billion global pharmaceutical industry. Brief Summary of Book: A Touch of Innocence: (A Demisexual M M Fairy Romance) Touch #1 by Julie Mannino The legion was created for a number of reasons, but for good or ill, it has been used over the years to do a lot of work where France was unable or unwilling to use regular forces. Although this image is partly true, the reality was different for most foreign legionnaires. Think Beau Geste (or even Carry on, Follow that Camel!). A dogged soldier, almost certainly running away from his past, in a dark uniform, kepi on his head, linen curtain hanging down over his neck at the back, marching through the deserts of North Africa. Mention the Foreign Legion to most people, and an image will flash into their mind. From its beginnings, it has been shadowy taking recruits from virtually anywhere, although some of the wilder legends are probably just that legends. Over the years, it has worked hard to remain secretive and closed to the outside world. The French Foreign Legion is one of those organisations that has achieved almost mythical status. In each sacrifice consumed by fire from heaven, God was making an important point. Carmel, in response to the prophet’s simple prayer (1 Kings 18:38). On at least three occasions, God sent fire from above in order to consume a sacrifice: fire came down from heaven to consume the sacrifice that David offered on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite (1 Chronicles 21:26) to consume the sacrifice at the dedication of the temple, in the presence of King Solomon and the people of Israel (2 Chronicles 7:1) and to consume Elijah’s sacrifice on Mt. God also used fire from heaven to judge the soldiers sent by the wicked king Ahaziah to arrest Elijah-twice, fire descended from heaven to consume a group of fifty soldiers sent on the king’s business (2 Kings 1:10, 12).īut fire from heaven is not exclusively a means of judgment. Fire in the form of burning sulfur rained from the heavens and destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:24 Luke 17:29). On the other side of his trials, Job was blessed with even larger flocks (Job 42:12).įire coming down from heaven was also a means of God’s judgment. It was a tragedy allowed by God and, in the end, bringing glory to God. This was a direct attack from Satan, but, as the earlier part of Job 1 explains, Satan was acting with the permission of God (verse 12). The Bible records at least six of these instances:įire fell from heaven and destroyed Job’s flocks (Job 1:16). Fire has come down from heaven several times in history. and both are very raw and very graphic in their portrayal of life afterward. But both touch on survival after a catastrophic event. The prose has a run-on quality while that of The Road is spartan - so in that regard they are dissimilar. This may drive some readers crazy, but I felt it totally fit the atmosphere of the book. The prose also uses minimal punctuation and no quotation marks. This book could not remind me much more of The Road, and yet it is different. Saragamo's follows a number of people who band together in an attempt to survive. except instead of blackness, he sees pure snowy whiteness and nothing else.Īs the blindness spreads, we see authorities panic, and then ultimately the city becomes the setting for a complete and catastrophic disaster. It starts off with a single driver who suddenly, while driving, becomes blind. Saramago paints a grim picture of a world where blindness spreads, like a disease, throughout a community. Fans of literary fiction really shouldn't miss this work. |
